What to do at Community Music Day

Son de la Tierra
Son de la Tierra is a Resident Company from East Bay Center for the Performing Arts. Under the direction of Lolis García and Claudio Vega, Son de la Tierra reflects an intense commitment to traditional practices of distinct Mexican dance, poetry, music, and ceremonial occasions including Xantolo (Día de Muertos), La Rama (Christmas Procession), and Fandangos (Communal Musical Party). Central to this group’s purpose is a dedication to Son as a cultural form, exemplifying a range of unique expressions from rural Mexican villages to inner-city California neighborhoods.

Very First Concerts with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra
San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and Crowden encourage audiences to get up and dance in Very First Concerts, a classical series designed with the youngest listeners in mind. Each concert features a central theme, short selections, and hands-on musical activities geared toward families with young children (infants to 7 year-olds).
This year's theme is "Classic Kids!"
These concerts have it all! To be sure, you’ll love hearing how different (and how much the same) these instruments are. Try it for yourself!
Repeat performances at 10:15, 11, and 11:45am

Compose with Philharmonia
Compose your own original music and hear it performed by members of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. Suitable for all ages, you draw and PBO musicians will interpret your drawing into musical sound!

Instrument Petting Zoo
Crowden’s entire campus transforms into our gigantic Instrument Petting Zoo, where kids and adults alike explore all the different instruments in a symphony orchestra. Kids love learning about musical instruments from other kids—and our Student Zookeepers are happy to help you make sounds on the different instruments! We even have tiny violins and cellos for wee fingers. Bang your heart out at our extensive percussion 'zoo,' visit harps presented by Multicultural Music Fellowship, we even have historical instruments presented by San Francisco Early Music Society!
