What was life like in Ancient Mesopotamia (one of the first civilizations)? Crowden School 6th graders explored this question by creating board games centered around the challenges and advantages that came from living in the Fertile Crescent. For example, one board game featured a march to a ziggurat, while another board game featured a social hierarchy, with king and priest being at the top. In all of the games, you faced challenges around food, farming, and irrigation.
We invited the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to join our classroom and play the games the 6th graders designed, and everyone had a fabulous time. All of our guests were curious and polite, and the 6th graders made fabulous hosts. My intention is to always have students imagine what life would have been like during a particular period through hands-on activities, and these board games showed their ability to do so.
