Hands-On Math! Estimation and Organizational Systems

Oct 4, 2024

Crowden School third and fourth graders engaged in a hands-on estimation activity that involved several steps to enhance their understanding of organizational systems and money. They began by estimating amounts by lifting a bank, followed by estimating the money visible in a clear jar.

Next, they worked with amounts in their baskets, utilizing an organized counting system. To ensure accuracy, they had to verify their totals by recounting and checking their system if discrepancies arose.

Additionally, an estimation game displayed on the overhead challenged them to quickly determine which side had more, using their Left or Right post-its within a time limit of about 10 seconds. Afterwards, they discussed what systems they could use to verify their estimates.
